Why does the skin change during pregnancy

Pregnancy is probably the most exciting time a woman goes through - on an emotional and physical level. In addition to the growing baby bump, there are many other exciting developments - the skin also changes. Skincare plays a special role during pregnancy for many reasons, as does skincare in general.

Many mums-to-be rave about how even, plump and radiant their skin has been since the start of pregnancy. And there are pregnant women who suddenly develop acne or extreme dry skin Skin care during pregnancy should therefore definitely be adapted to individual needs.

In addition, the skin of expectant mothers often reacts very sensitively to synthetic ingredients in cosmetics and fragrances can also be perceived much more intensely. And because a little person is growing in their belly, mums-to-be are often much more concerned with what they put on their skin.

But first, let's take a look at why the skin changes with the growing belly and why the beauty routine should now get an update and why a customized pregnancy skincare routine makes sense.

Pregnancy hormones - how hormones change the skin

Because your body is an ingenious construct and everything is thought through down to the last detail, your hormone balance adjusts perfectly to pregnancy. It may not feel like it on some days, but everything in you is working to ensure that you and your baby get through this magical time in good health.

The sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone play a special role here. They are increasingly produced by the pregnancy hormone hCG and stimulate various metabolic processes in the body. Visible effects of the new hormone balance can be a changed complexion, fuller hair or stronger nails.

What is not visible is what happens in the body. Progesterone stimulates blood circulation, for example to ensure a good blood supply to the pelvis or to prevent premature contractions of the uterus. The sex hormone oestrogen also performs many important tasks. For example, it stimulates the cardiovascular system so that the unborn child also receives sufficient oxygen.

This means that the skin is better supplied with blood, nutrients and oxygen. It also retains more water. The hormones also provide the famous baby glow - rosy, radiant and beautifully plumped-up skin. However, hormones do not always produce the coveted baby glow.

Acne - special skin care during pregnancy

Please don't put yourself under pressure if you're not part of Team Baby-Glow and you've been dealing with blemishes since the beginning of your pregnancy. Almost half of super moms-to-be suffer from spots, especially in the first three months.

Women who already had to deal with acne during puberty are particularly frequently affected. However, even those who have always had clear skin can develop pregnancy acne due to hormonal changes.

Metabolic processes and hormonal fluctuations can also stimulate the sebaceous glands and pregnancy acne can develop. Sometimes your skin simply needs a while to get used to the new circumstances - and you can support it wonderfully in this process.

What can you do about acne during pregnancy?

Cosmetics during pregnancy should be tailored to your skin. blemish prone skin now needs mild, intensively moisturizing, anti-inflammatory and natural care. So that you don't have to start studying the small print, I have put together a little beauty plan for your pregnancy skincare for blemished skin:

  • Regular facial cleansing is essential to remove excess sebum and bacteria from the skin.
  • Use a mild product like our Cleansing Oil or the Cleansing Gel You can also use it on oily and blemished skin. Selected oils such as argan, jojoba and Castor Oil and mild sugar surfactants dissolve excess sebum without disrupting the skin's protective barrier. This is so important because the slightly acidic pH-value of the protective acid mantle ensures that bacteria and pathogens cannot penetrate the skin.
  • Harsh cleansers with alcohol can disrupt the barrier and make it easy for bacteria to start inflammatory processes deep in the pores. Therefore: Hands off!
  • Always gently dab your face with a clean Towel after cleanser .
  • Our Rosewater refreshes and revitalizes, while at the same time helping the skin to find its balance. The rose fragrance has a positive effect on your well-being and helps you relax - your baby will be happy too.
  • You can also use our Aloe Vera Spray to moisturize and soothe your skin.
  • This Azelaic acid serum takes acute care of impurities and at the same time has a mattifying effect against oily shine.
  • For pregnancy acne and blemishes, Skincare is a moisturizing and light skin care product such as our Aloe Vera gel. In addition to a good moisture boost, it also contains soothing and anti-inflammatory substances that help inflammation and redness to subside more quickly.
  • Pregnant women can use our hyaluronic acid products without hesitation. Apply it under your day cream when your skin needs extra moisture.
  • For dry areas, you can use hyaluronic acid cream medium for dry areas.
  • Change towels and pillows frequently to prevent bacteria from multiplying.
  • For the spot treatment of pimples, I recommend the Spot cream. It dries out the pimple at specific points and promotes the healing process of your skin so that it is soon fully functional again.
  • For moments of relaxation, enjoy the Clay Mask. It will not only be good for your mind, but also for your skin. It gently removes dead skin cells, works anti-inflammatory and regulates sebum production. The tri-factor for blemished skin.
  • Avoid foods that rapidly raise blood sugar levels, such as white flour products and sweets. You can support your skin health from the inside with an anti-inflammatory diet.
  • Make sure you relax sufficiently, for example with gentle yoga for pregnant women, breathing exercises or nice walks. This reduces stress hormones that can trigger inflammatory processes in the body.

Acne during pregnancy - it's worth persevering

Please do not touch your face unnecessarily. This will bring countless bacteria onto the skin, which can cause new pimples. And once the pimple is there: dab locally with anti-inflammatory agents but do not press around, as pus can spread in the tissue or on the surface of the skin and cause new inflammation.

Pressing can also injure the tissue. It is not so easy to hold back when such a bright red culprit is grinning cheekily at you. Give your body and cosmetic products some time and let them take over. That way, you won't have to worry about acne marks or scars.

If you don't just have the occasional pimple, but also pregnancy acne that may be causing you psychological distress, a dermatologist should definitely take a look at your skin.

Pregnancy - Skin care for dry skin

If you get dry skin during pregnancy, this is probably due to water retention (oedema) in certain areas such as the legs. Oedema stores the water that is now missing in other layers of the skin. The already stressed skin on the stomach in particular can now become tight and itchy.

In addition to an optimally adapted Skincare during pregnancy, skin care for other parts of the body also plays an important role. Here, too, you can do a lot to regain beautiful and healthy skin:

When showering or bathing, make sure that the water is not warmer than 38 degrees. Give something Almond Oil into the bath water to moisturize your skin while bathing Protect and Moisturize.

Pamper your skin after a bath or shower or if required in between with a rich skin care product such as our organicAlmond Oil or Pregnancy Oil.

The Pregnancy Oil nourishes, strengthens and soothes your skin with valuable plant oils such as Jojoba Oil, wheat germ oil, evening primrose oil and calendula extract. It leaves the skin silky soft and noticeably improves its elasticity. Gently massage it into the areas where stretch marks can form: Abdomen, thighs, bottom, hips or breasts.

With a relaxing baby bump massage, you can take care of your skin and connect wonderfully with your baby. These short breaks are wonderful bonding moments that can later be reflected in an intimate mother-child relationship.

A gentle massage can bring relief to heavy legs: Warm some Almond Oil or Pregnancy Oil in your hands and apply it with gentle stroking movements from the ankles to the thighs.
If your facial skin is also dry, it needs moisture and sufficient oil. Our hyaluronic acid Concentrate and one of our hyaluronic creams make a great combination for Skincare dry skin during pregnancy. You can also apply a little Jojoba Oil to particularly dry areas.

Our Pregnancy Oil

Gently cares for your skin and can protect it from stretch marks Protect.

Which ingredients should not be used during pregnancy?

Most cosmetic products from JUNGLÜCK are ideal for pregnancy skincare, as they contain no chemical preservatives, fragrances and only very mild surfactants. However, as we also offer active ingredient cosmetics, there are some products that you should avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Retinal cream and Retinal serum: Pregnant women should refrain from using cosmetics with retinal and products containing retinal.

AHA peeling : Mild fruit acids are considered harmless, but your skin can react very sensitively during pregnancy. For a gentle peeling you can also apply a little Cleansing Oil to a soft face brush and gently brush over your face in a circular motion.

BHA peeling : Wondering why Salicylic Acid should not be applied to the skin during pregnancy? Salicylic Acid (BHA) can pose a risk to pregnancy in high doses. Although our BHA peeling with 2 percent Salicylic Acid is considered safe during pregnancy, we would still like to advise against it to be on the safe side. Also because the skin of pregnant women may react more intensively to Salicylic Acid .

Your body is a masterpiece

Finally, I would like to encourage you to be lenient with your body. Perhaps not all days are rosy, perhaps it sometimes grumbles and perhaps a pimple here or a dry patch there annoys you. And yet your entire body is always working for you.

Perhaps it wants to tell you in its own way that something is out of balance. Perhaps your skin cannot tolerate certain chemical ingredients and would like a milder and natural cosmetic, perhaps you need more rest, or perhaps you need more exercise, certain nutrients or vitamins - listen to your body and your intuition.

I like to sit down AM on my meditation cushion after my little yoga program and listen to what my body and mind have to tell me. It's amazing how much knowledge already lies within you. And it's nice to enter into an appreciative relationship with your own body.

Give your body time and loving support - through a healthy lifestyle, sensitive attention and gentle care. It does an incredible job, especially during pregnancy and in the time afterwards. I wish you and your baby a magical nine months!

Your Lena
