Skin care in fall: Why your skin needs seasonal care

Lena Severin

September, October, November... Autumn is in full swing, even if it arrived a little later this year. But when it gets crisp and cold, the wind nibbles uncomfortably at our skin and we want to pull the zipper of our jackets up to our chin, we have to come up with something to combat the autumn air. What does this mean for skincare? Do I need a different skincare routine for every season?

Autumn means change - also for the skin. Because while the thermometer climbs downwards and the windmills in the front gardens pick up speed, the skin longs for more nourishment and protection. Nourishing serums, hydrating concentrates and the light textures of summer skincare are no longer enough in the colder seasons. Creams, oils, body lotions, scarves and wool sweaters can find their way back out of their summer hiding places. Autumn skincare means strengthening the skin's protective barrier, moisturizing and, above all, taking the time to really enjoy skincare so that you can wind down a little.

The answer to the question in the headline, short and sweet: Yes. Find out here why your skin's needs change, how you can adapt your skincare routine and get your skin through the transition phase and the fall that follows.

1. skin in the fall: Why does the skin change over the course of the year?

The basic structure of your skin does not change throughout the year. What does change, however, are its needs. This is because your skin is influenced by external factors such as wind, weather, temperature, humidity and sunlight. And if your skin's needs are not met, it can react with dryness, an oily sheen or blemishes, for example.

While in summer we need to ensure that we maintain the skin's moisture balance - namely with light textures such as serums and concentrates - in autumn and even more so in winter we need to make sure that we supply it with sufficient lipids. Richness is required in addition to moisturizing. Wind, cold temperatures and heating air in particular can severely dry out the skin. Dryness can then lead to the skin barrier no longer being stable enough to prevent viruses and bacteria from penetrating. At the same time, the skin can no longer retain moisture well, which increases itching, flaking and tightness. You can see the consequences of an impaired skin protection barrier in the graphic below:

You may have already noticed that the right skincare can keep your skin healthy, regardless of the weather and the current calendar. It is therefore important that you learn to understand your skin. This will enable you to respond specifically to its needs and know when to use a day cream, for example, and when a light serum will suffice. And don't worry, seasonal skincare doesn't have to mean buying completely new products.

2. update your routine: oils, creams & co. for your skin care in fall

As already mentioned, your bank account doesn't have to go into shock because you have to buy completely new skincare products 4 times a year. Care smarter is the motto here! This means that you give your skin one step more richness with the change from summer to fall. For example, by supplementing your day cream. You can start with this in the evening when you notice the first signs of dry skin. Depending on your needs, you can then use it later in the morning and use PM a nourishing oil in addition to your existing routine. You don't have to reach for the richest oil in your repertoire (that's the Almond Oil - did you know?). Light oils oils such as Squalane, argan or Jojoba Oil are perfect for the transition. Incidentally, you can also use these for your hair and have a multi-purpose product, even if your skin doesn't need any extra oil at the moment. Because hair craves moisture and protection even in summer, especially curly hair.

But back to skincare. Let me give you an example of how I adapt my routine throughout the year:

As you can see, not much has changed in my routine. Not much is added or dropped and I use many of the products, such as toner, every six months anyway, so I can alternate between them without having to put a product on the waiting list.

Incidentally, it's not just the skin that changes with the seasons and external influences, but also the hair. In winter, they can become "rough" from wearing hats and scarves, lose their shine and perhaps also tend to dry out more quickly. In summer, the sun, salt water and perhaps more frequent washing are particularly stressful. In both cases, an extra portion of moisture can do no harm. With the products in the hair care line you are in the right place. And if you tend to have flat hair with a greasy scalp, I recommend our volume products. Of course, the different lines can also be wonderfully combined. Browse through and find your perfect care!

3. protection from the outside: clothing that protects your skin from the cold

However, the right care alone does not protect our skin from the cold, wind and weather. What we use to keep ourselves warm from the outside plays a major role here, because the skin wants to be able to breathe and not be suffocated. Natural materials such as wool, alpaca or cashmere, for example, manage the balancing act between keeping us warm and allowing us to breathe.

hessnatur has been producing sustainable clothing from natural materials for over 45 years. Their concept is similar to ours: We put people and the planet first. With timeless designs made from natural materials, your skin is protected in a particularly delicate way in fall and winter.

Materials that protect your skin from the cold Protect:

Organic virgin wool
Virgin wool has a very useful property: it regulates body temperature so that we don't cool down, but at the same time prevents heat build-up. Wool is also self-cleaning, as water droplets, dirt and dust have difficulty penetrating the fibers. It is therefore perfectly sufficient to air the garment instead of constantly washing it. This not only saves water, but also energy and time.

Alpaca: a fine hair
Alpaca, camel, cashmere or yak - they all have one thing in common: they are all fine hairs. These are particularly high-quality animal hairs that do not come from sheep. These natural fibers are soft on the skin, wonderfully warm and also look super cuddly. hessnatur checks the origin very carefully and demands great transparency from the manufacturers, who must meet strict guidelines.

You probably know alpaca hair. It is particularly popular because it is very light, heat-regulating and super soft. At hessnatur, products made from alpaca are processed in Peru, from the hair to the finished favorite sweater, jacket and co. In this way, they help shepherds in the Andes who look after the free-roaming animals, support yarn suppliers and embroiderers and save CO2 with a closed textile chain on site. So much commitment suits them - and you too.

Rhön wool from Germany.
Rhön wool has hardly been used since the 1970s, which has led to a sharp decline in the population of Rhön sheep and the breed being threatened with extinction. To support the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve, hessnatur launched a project to preserve this breed in 2001 and has been using the wool to make robust jackets, coats and carpets ever since.

Admittedly, you can do the last point at any time of year, but I find that fall offers a very special opportunity for this. Summer is over: the time when you're out and about a lot, constantly running outside from friends to parties, to the lake and back. And I don't know about you, but I'm longing to get some peace and quiet to recharge my batteries. Ultimately, a relaxed mindset will also have a positive effect on your skin. After all, it reacts more or less sensitively to stress and emotional strain. So let's simply plan a little more time for ourselves this fall, without any stress or appointments. Are you in?
