blemish prone skin - Causes & tips for correct care

by Leonie Poppe

Sugar escapades, alcohol, stress, genes or, as is so often the case, our hormones. There are so many possible causes for blemish prone skin. What these are in the end, whether individually or in combination, is entirely up to the individual. To get rid of blemishes, spots and oily skin in the long term, it is definitely worth finding your own personal triggers and avoiding them as much as possible. Of course, this can sometimes take some time and patience. Until then, however, I can give you 6 tips on how to care for your skin to counteract the appearance of further impurities from the outside and help your skin to regain its balance and healthy glow.

That's why this article is about that:

  1. What are the causes of blemish prone skin?
  2. Diet: Which foods cause pimples?
  3. Everyday tips for blemish prone skin
  4. Facial cleansing
  5. Your care for blemished skin - in 6 steps

1. what are the causes of blemish prone skin?

Yes, there are many factors that influence the clarity of your skin. Stress, hormones, predisposition and the wrong diet all play a decisive role here. Sometimes it's a bit of everything.

In the winter months, cold air and heating play a major role, in the summer months sunlight and heat. For menstruating people, the menstrual cycle also has a say, as does nutrition for everyone. At festivities celebrated with wonderful treats and drinks, the uninvited effects of the feast appear on the skin a few days later.

The causes of blemishes are varied and unfortunately often not easy to fathom. To start with, you can ask yourself the following question: Do my blemishes occur permanently or in phases?

Possible causes of permanent blemishes:

Pre-existing conditions

Some illnesses Treat affect the appearance of the skin. This can range from the flu to more serious illnesses. If you suspect a connection here, it is best to consult a doctor. Avoid irritating products if possible and pay particular attention to the ingredients. You should avoid surfactants and aggressive Actives

Taking medication

If it is not the disease itself, it could also be a medication. Take a look at the list of side effects, you may find what you are looking for there. Here too, it is best to consult a doctor to find an alternative medication. Avoid irritating products if possible and pay particular attention to the ingredients. You should avoid surfactants and aggressive Actives

Hormonal contraceptives

I know it's a sore subject, but unfortunately the pill, hormone IUDs and the like also play a major role here. This is because the preparations taken not only affect the reproductive organs, but also the body's sensitive hormonal cycle. And since everything, really everything, in the body is coordinated and interacts with each other, the skin can suffer as a result. What can help? Talk to your gynecologist, try a different product or even a different (perhaps non-hormonal) contraceptive method. Our BHA peeling and Retinal serum are ideal to help rebalance your skin and remove impurities.

Age

There are, of course, age groups in which blemish prone skin is a more widespread phenomenon than in others. As a teenager, hormones swirl through the body and accompany us for several years on our journey from child to young adult. In most cases, this leads to more or less blemishes, and in some cases even to more pronounced acne. The menopause brings similar symptoms. When the female reproductive organs gradually stop working, the body also goes through a period of adjustment, which can also be noticeable on the skin. Of course, it is difficult to bring such natural processes of the body under control. But in this case, we can do everything we can to support and balance our skin's natural functions in the best possible way. So use sebum-regulating products in particular, such as the Niacinamide serumour Zinc toner or BHA peeling. This is a good way to remove excess sebum and counteract overproduction.

Environment

The environment in which we find ourselves also has an influence on our skin. In some urban areas in particular, air purity leaves a lot to be desired. It is not only the airways and lungs that suffer. The particles in the air collect on the skin and can easily irritate it and cause blemishes. A strong skin barrier and sufficient antioxidants are particularly important. A balanced, healthy diet and the right skincare products will help you to prepare your skin for city life. Pomegranate seeds, for example, are a real antioxidant bomb. And our Vitamin C serum Intensivewhich fends off the many free radicals, together with the Rosehip Seed Oilwhich has a regenerating and strengthening effect, protects your skin from the outside and inside.

Care routine

If your skincare routine doesn't suit your skin type and condition, it can throw your skin off balance. Also, don't believe all product promises. There are plenty of cosmetic products that promise a lot, but when you look at the INCI list, your hair stands on end. I advise you to invest some time in detailed research into critical ingredients so that you can spot the really big red flags such as microplastics, silicones and parabens straight away. Apps like Codecheck are a great way to find out what's behind the strange ingredients. At least you can tell the good products from the bad.

When it comes to finding the right skincare for your individual skin, I can recommend our skin consultant to your heart. By asking specific questions, you can find out in about 5 minutes what skin type and condition you have and which products would be suitable for you. If you have any questions, you can also contact our customer service team for more detailed advice.

Nutrition

Not only what we let into our body from the outside, but also what we absorb from the inside determines the appearance of our skin. As nutrition plays a special role, I will dedicate a completely separate section to this topic below. But first:

Possible causes of impurities in phases:

Stress

Project deadlines, exam dates, busy schedules, social obligations, emotional strain... all stress factors that we have to deal with in our everyday lives. I'd like to shake off tips like "Don't expose yourself to stress in the first place" with a verbal slap in the face. The reality is quite different. As soon as you interact with other people, whether professionally or privately, potential sources of stress are inevitable. So unless we want to live far away from all human contact, we have to be able to deal with this stress. And there we have the keyword: contact. Of course, in some cases, we have control over whether or not we let stress get to us... for example, if we procrastinate until the last second and get into hot water with our deadlines. For everything else, let's learn to deal with it in a healthy way. Take a deep breath, stay structured, think rationally. This will help us to get a grip on the symptoms of stress from the inside. On the outside, it helps to use products that are particularly anti-inflammatory, sebum-regulating and soothing. Our BHA peeling cleanses the skin overnight, Aloe Vera Spray soothes and moisturizes it, which is also great for the hair. The Niacinamide serum in the morning strengthens the skin barrier and supports the skin in its natural functions, especially when stress makes it difficult. Finish with one of the hyaluronic creams for additional moisture and rich protection.

Hormones

Have you ever considered whether your blemishes in phases are related to your cycle? There are many women who complain that they have more blemishes just before their period to face, but also on their shoulders, arms and décolleté. If you're not quite sure, I recommend tracking your period and also your skin texture. If you notice any changes, write them down in your calendar. If your blemishes are related to your cycle, you'll quickly get to the bottom of it. Of course, it is somewhat difficult to do something about hormonal blemishes from the inside. However, you can still support your skin with targeted skincare products. Retinal serum regulates sebum production, works anti-inflammatory and ensures a balanced complexion. This BHA peeling removes excess sebum and dead skin cells from your skin. This Niacinamide serum strengthens the skin barrier and supports the skin in its natural processes. If you would like to know more about hormones and the connection with the skin, I recommend this podcast with hormone coach Kati Siemens

If you are pregnant and are struggling with blemishes due to your wild hormones, I have prepared a slightly different product recommendation for you, because you should not use Retinal during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, during pregnancy you can use the Niacinamide serum to strengthen your skin, our aloe vera gel for sufficient moisture apply and of course sun screen to prevent blemishes from developing in the first place. After pregnancy and during breastfeeding, you can then use the BHA peeling to remove excess sebum and dead skin cells overnight. However, you should use Niacinamide and BHA peeling at different times. In other words Niacinamide in the morning, BHA in the evening.

Environment

Anyone who has traveled to other climate zones may have already experienced changes to their skin. City trips can also expose your skin to new challenges if the air is more polluted than where you normally spend your time. Important here: Make sure you adapt your routine to your environment. If you are traveling to tropical climates, avoid rich creams and rely on serums and, for example, the hyaluronic acid Concentrateto keep your skin's moisture balance stable. A gentle cleanser to remove sun cream and sweat in the evening is possible with Cleansing Oil , for example. If you prefer a northern vacation, opt for richer creams and moisturizers. oilsto protect your skin from the wind and weather Protect. In cold temperatures, it is best to completely avoid products containing water for day care. Rich oils creams act like a protective layer over the skin, helping it to retain heat better. So to summarize: Lots of heat, Mediterranean, tropical conditions = moisturizer. Wind, rain, slightly colder temperatures = rich moisture. Winter vacation = water-free products, instead oils and richer creams.

Nutrition

Now we come to the big topic: nutrition. And because it's such a big influencing factor, I'm writing an extra section just for this:

2. diet: Which foods cause pimples?

As we now know, our intestines are one of the largest excretory organs we have. If we burden it with heavy food, excessive amounts of sugar, dairy products and alcohol, it has no choice but to fall back on its partner - the skin. This then takes over the elimination of toxins. Pimple alert!

Contrary to the obvious assumption that fatty foods in particular cause oily and blemish prone skin skin, dairy products and sugar are usually the culprits. In general, foods that drive up the glycemic index, i.e. our insulin levels, also increase sebum production in the skin by activating androgenic hormones.

This brings us back full circle to the topic of men and their skin and why they often struggle with blemishes.

Diet is one of the factors that we can influence. A vegan diet could improve things a lot. However, I am of the opinion that not everyone is the same and that nutrition is therefore a very individual matter. In principle, however, there are studies on the subject that also prove that a diet heavy in dairy products and sugar promotes pimples and blackheads in most of us. But if you're like me, then unfortunately you don't manage to be sensible 24/7 and just feel like going overboard. And we're allowed to indulge in that from time to time!

"WHEN THE CHEESE IS ALREADY BITTEN"

Just like JUNGLÜCK, I also come from Munich and therefore grew up in a Bavarian environment. Here we have the saying "Da is der Kas scho bissn"! In High German "The cheese is already bitten". According to the motto, what do I do with my skin when it's already too late? When I've already filled my stomach with raclette and chocolate fondue in a sugar, casein and lactose paradise and I can see the effects on my face?

Firstly, you can of course decide to eat a healthier and more balanced diet for the time being. According to your body's needs. But as always, cleanser and the right skincare are the key to combating existing impurities. In our podcast episode with Kati Siemenshormone coach and integrated nutritionist, she explains the exact connection between our skin and our diet.

In addition to the products mentioned above, which you can use for specific causes, we have also developed a general routine for blemish prone skin . However, you can simply integrate or swap in the products we recommend for your specific cause here.

Step 01 cleanser: Cleansing Oil or Cleansing Gel

Start here with the Cleansing Oil. And yes, oil on oily skin works better than it sounds! Apply it to the dry skin and massage it in gently. The Cleansing Oil binds with dirt, sebum, make-up and other fat-soluble deposits without attacking the skin's protective acid mantle. Then either remove the oil with a warm, damp washcloth or gently wash your face with water. The mixture of water and oil creates an emulsion that cleanses thoroughly, does not dry out and yet does not leave a greasy film.

This Zinc toner can be sprayed on afterwards - then the cleanser is complete. The toner also unclogs pores, cares for inflamed areas, has an antimicrobial effect and regulates sebum production.

Step 02 BHA peeling

This BHA peeling I recommend applying this 2-3 times a week in the evening after cleanser . Feel free to test it on a small area beforehand and see how your skin reacts. As a rule, your skin should tolerate the fruit acid peel well. By removing dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin and penetrating your pores to cleanse them of excess sebum, BHA peeling is a great preparation for Retinal cream.

In addition, Treat contains fruit acids, such as Salicylic Acid, to counteract pimples and Moisturize therefore also provides blemish prone skin in particular with plenty of moisture and has a convincing antibacterial effect. To do this, spread the liquid evenly over your face and gently pat it in. That's it. rinse-off is not necessary!

But ATTENTION: BHA and also AHA peelings should only be used separately from naicinamide. peeling in the evening and Niacinamide serum or even Zinc toner in the morning is perfectly fine. Or alternate the products in the evening.

Step 03 serum: Vitamin C serum

Thanks to cleanser , your skin is now optimally prepared for all the important nutrients and special treatments. For example for Vitamin C! Our Vitamin C serums can be easily applied with the pipette apply. Apply a few drops to your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks, leave-on and leave to absorb. The potent antioxidant protects your skin from environmental influences throughout the day and gives it a beautiful freshness. Also ideal under make-up.

Step 04 Hyaluron Concentrate

Our favorite, the hyaluronic acid Concentratein the next step apply and allow to absorb briefly. blemish prone skin needs a lot of moisture to be vital. Well-moisturized skin can regenerate faster and pimple marks are avoided. The Concentrate is perfect for this as it is light, absorbs quickly and does not burden the skin with unnecessary ingredients.

Step 05 cream: Retinal cream

Our Retinal cream is also one of the must-haves for blemished skin and should only be applied to PM . You can find a full article on the Skinhero here. Briefly summarized: Retinal regulates sebum production, collagen formation and has an effect antioxidative. The best combination for blemished skin. I always apply cream after the evening cleanser and leave it on overnight. Then the retinal has time to unfold and thus supports the skin's own regeneration literally while you sleep.

Step 06 sun screen

UV protection is an important component of proper skin care. And this applies to every skin type. However, it is especially important to pay attention to the necessary sun screen for blemished skin, which is prone to pimple scars. This prevents dark spots that could remain and slows down skin ageing. The Actives used in steps 02 and 05 also require a day care product with SPF. For this you can use our sun cream or our sun fluid apply. The mineral filters in the sun cream Protect will protect your skin throughout the day, while the light texture of the day cream provides you with additional moisture.

It may seem like a long routine at first, but not every product is meant for day and night and the individual steps don't take long and if you do them consciously, you give yourself me-time, attention and love at the same time. What better way to start the new year than with good habits and a fresh and healthy complexion that puts a smile on your face.

Take care!
