Summer tan without the sun - a self-tanner as a Concentrate

Lena Severin

Spring is on its way and the sun is slowly making an appearance more and more often. With the increasing intensity of the sun, it's time to bring your sunscreen back out of hibernation and into the bathroom cabinet - if you've even put it away for the gray months.

I don't know about you, but nobody in the JUNGLÜCK team is really in the mood for pale winter skin anymore. We long for freshness, for glow, for a sun-kissed spring tan. Unfortunately, UV radiation is not good for the skin, especially now that it has become more sensitive to light after the long winter months. Particularly bad sunburns can occur in this first spring sunshine, because we often forget to prepare ourselves for UV radiation with sun screen . In combination with our skin's sensitivity to light, instead of a light tan, an unhealthy redness appears immediately.

1. how does self-tanner work?

Self-tanners are available in all possible forms: As cream, gel, cloth, spray... The tan usually comes from color pigments or active ingredients. Small spoiler: Our Tanning Drops works better - but more on that later.

We have opted for a Concentrate for the version of our self-tanner. This means you can dose it yourself depending on the desired tan and mix it with your face cream or body lotion. You should definitely not use it on its own - unless you want to get as crispy a tan as Ross from Friends (season 10, episode 3).

But how exactly does this work with the Tanning skin?

Generally speaking, there are various substances that tan the skin without sun exposure. Some products contain color pigments that can be applied to the skin surface apply . The disadvantage here: These pigments usually not only color the skin, but also clothing, comforters and pillows. So you really have to pay attention to the application time. However, we don't want to spend too much time with these products because our self-tanning concentrate does not contain any color pigments at all. How does that work? Thanks to the ingredients DHA and erythrulose. Both substances are sugar derivatives of plant origin that react with the enzymes in the horny cells of the top layer of skin. This process is technically known as the "Maillard reaction". This gently tans your skin - without discoloration, daily apply or harmful UV radiation.

We deliberately opted for the combination of DHA and erytrhrulose, as both together produced the most natural tan in our tests. Neither orange nor too yellow. We have also diligently tested this internally in our team on various skin tones and found them all to be great.
The erythrulose in the product also has another advantage: the tan lasts longer than with products that only use DHA.

Tanning Drops

BY THE WAY: DHA is a substance that has also been used for spray-tan showers and has often been criticized in this context in the past. This is because the fine mist with which you are sprayed usually also enters the lungs via the respiratory tract, which is definitely a cause for concern. However, you don't need to worry when applying it externally in a cream or, as in our case, in the form of a serum. There are specified conditions under which DHA may be used in a product, such as which other ingredients it may be combined with, what the minimum shelf life is and so on. You can therefore use our Tanning Drops without hesitation. And you don't have to compromise on your environmental awareness either, because on top of all these regulations, we have opted for a purely plant-based variant for our DHA.

Why is our Tanning Drops brown if we don't use pigments?

Don't worry, the brown color of the concentrate only serves as an aid to make sure that you have mixed it well with your cream . Normally, our self-tanner would be colourless - not so easy to see whether it is really mixed in completely homogeneously in your hands. That's why we thought that a natural colorant made from sugar would make the whole thing much easier so that you have evenly tanned skin. Your tanned skin won't rub off. However, if you want to be on the safe side and make sure that the dye from the self-tanning concentrate doesn't rub off on your clothes the next morning, plan a shower for the morning after application.

2. how is Tanning Drops used?

Now that you know exactly how the tanning magic works, you'll want to know how to use our self-tanning concentrate.
Tanning Drops for your face
The best way to use Concentrate is in combination with the hyaluronic acid cream medium product. Important before you start mixing and creaming: Make sure your skin is smooth, without rough patches and remnants of dead skin cells. The result will be beautifully even on smooth skin. For this, I recommend our enzyme peeling! Mix 2-3 pea-sized portions of the powder with a few drops of water to create a fine foam between your hands that gently exfoliates your skin. With your skin cleansed, you can then continue with your normal evening routine. Whether toner, serum, Concentrate or just a cream - the self-tanning concentrate is compatible with all products.

Individual mixing ratio for the perfect tan

When you have reached the care step, pour approx. 2-3 pumps of your cream into the palm of your hand. Mix exactly as needed the drops of the self-tanning concentrate and stir it thoroughly with your finger. Tanning Drops for your body.

The application on your body is exactly the same as on your face. Mix the desired dose into your body lotion in the palm of your hand so that it is well distributed. Then massage the cream evenly into your skin. Make sure you cover the entire surface of your skin to avoid streaks or gaps.

3. dosage of the self-tanning concentrate

The dosage is completely individual, as the tan can vary depending on the skin and everyone wants to achieve a tan of varying intensity. I recommend that you start small. For orientation:

  • 1-2 drops for a light, natural Tanning
  • 2-3 drops for a medium Tanning
  • 4-5 drops for an intensive Tanning

Tanning Drops

In the picture here you can see an example of how the different dosages look on my colleagues Sabrina, Marinus and Julie. We applied 2 drops to the wrist, 4 in the middle and even 6 at the bottom (for those who like it really crisp).

4. healthy summer tan with Tanning Drops

As you can see, you can easily find your individual tan with Tanning Drops . From "just been out in the sun" to "I live on a South Sea beach", it's all there.

So, are you ready to ring in spring with your skin?
