Because your body is an ingenious construct and everything is thought through down to the last detail, your hormone balance adjusts perfectly to pregnancy. The sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone play a special role here. They are increasingly produced by the pregnancy hormone hCG and stimulate various metabolic processes in the body. Visible effects of the new hormone balance can be a changed complexion, fuller hair or stronger nails.
What is not visible is what happens in the body. Progesterone stimulates blood circulation, for example to ensure a good blood supply to the pelvis or to prevent premature contractions of the uterus. The sex hormone oestrogen also performs many important tasks. For example, it stimulates the cardiovascular system so that the unborn child also receives sufficient oxygen.
This means that the skin is better supplied with blood, nutrients and oxygen. It also retains more water. The hormones also provide the famous baby glow - rosy, radiant and beautifully plumped-up skin. However, hormones do not always produce the coveted baby glow.
Acne - special skin care during pregnancy
Please don't put yourself under pressure if you're not part of Team Baby-Glow and you've been dealing with blemishes since the beginning of your pregnancy. Almost half of super mums-to-be suffer from spots, especially in the first three months.
Women who already had to deal with acne during puberty are particularly affected. But even those who have always had clear skin can develop pregnancy acne due to hormonal changes.
